Do you believe you have a Soul Contract? Have you ever asked, “Why does this always happen to me?” We’ve all been there, stuck in a cycle of one annoying experience after another, or were hit with a series of traumatic events. We think this is just how life is. A part of us hopes for the best, but in our hearts, we believe things will never work out for us.  What we’re really asking is, “Why isn’t my life the way I want it to be?” We look at other people’s lives longingly. We wish we could be more like them, have better relationships, more money and travel to exotic destinations. But are other people’s lives really better?

The truth is we don’t know, and it depends on how we measure ‘better.’ They may have great relationships, but serious financial issues or their health may suffer while their bank account overflows. The truth is that even the people we believe to be the most successful all experience some degree of suffering in their lives. It was some type of suffering they had to overcome for many, which led to their success.

Perhaps there is something we can learn from suffering. Maybe there is a reason we were born to these parents on this planet, a pre-determined destiny at work. One belief is that we live out our soul’s contract that was agreed to before we came to this time-space reality. If that is true, and we could see our lives from a different perspective, perhaps we, too, could turn our suffering into success.  So, what is a soul contract?

The soul contract is…

  • An agreement that your soul made, is like a checklist of lessons you need to learn to continue to expand into a higher state of consciousness before you arrive in this physical time-space reality.
  • A way of viewing your life, its ups and downs, the suffering and the triumphs.
  • An opportunity for you to exercise your free will with each predetermined event to choose to learn and grow OR repeat the lesson from each experience.

Your Soul’s Agreement

“There is an old Celtic legend that says, just before each person is born, they are allowed to choose every hardship that they would experience during their lifetime. In this tradition, everyone selects the challenges that they would be able to overcome, the situations and conditions that would push them to learn and grow but that would not defeat them.” – Jason Stephenson

The universe and everything in it continuously expands, and you are a part of the process. Before you entered this physical time and space, your soul sat with a team of guides and other souls to decide the best way for you to learn the lessons to evolve. Souls arrive at different levels if you think of the planet like a school. Some souls are kindergartners, and some are in high school; each soul is learning the relevant lesson for their level of evolution.

We need other souls to help us learn our lessons; for instance, one soul may need to learn patience and selflessness and may have a child with a disability. The child’s soul may have so much love for the parent that its soul agrees to be disabled. People may be born into poverty and learn their lessons through the experience of poverty, or they may become multi-millionaires. Families of souls often hang around each other for generations until they learn their lessons and break the cycle. There are no winners and losers. The contracts you create are for the mutual benefit of both parties involved.

Not every type of soul contract interaction needs to be earth-shattering; it could be a chance meeting with someone, synchronicity, or a kind word heard or uttered at the right time.  There are limitless ways to learn these lessons and choices with each experience. If the lessons are not learned, they will need to come back and try again and again. Here are some things included in the soul contract.

  • Sharing knowledge
  • Friend and family connections
  • Energy exchanges
  • Healing
  • Synchronistic meetings and exchanges
  • Soul code exchanges

A Way of Viewing Life

Whether or not you believe any of this, you can’t deny that life is an incredible mystery. For most of my life, I asked, “why me.” My soul’s journey included a heaping dose of pain and trauma. My experiences caused me to see my life through the limited lens of what “has happened” to me in my younger years. However, through meditation and contemplation, I saw my life through the lens of “what each event taught me.” From this view, I could appreciate my soul’s journey, which created relief, perspective, and trust in the process. By viewing your life from the perspective of a journey you chose that contributes to the universe’s evolution, you can see it more with a sense of awe rather than frustration. You can begin to see that you are LOVE, so, of course, you deserve love.

What About Free Will?

Although soul contracts are binding agreements, you enter them willingly. No bully is forcing you into a contract. For most people, the idea of a contract scares them a little, like a binding agreement with endless fine print. However, soul contracts are not like Earth-based contracts. You’re in complete control of the terms and don’t have to agree to anything. You’re fully protected…

The Meaning We Make of Our Lives

So, is it all written ahead of time? Are we just puppets on a string going with the tide of fate, or are, on the other hand, we in total control of everything? Well, both things are true, life is happening to us (for us), and we are creating it simultaneously. The nerves in our ears turn vibrations into sound, and the nerves in our eyes turn light into images. How we interpret things that happen to us, and the meaning we choose to make from them determines the quality of our life.

Countless cases of people in extreme circumstances later described them as beneficial opportunities for growth.  For example, at 17, Jerry Long developed quadriplegia from a diving accident. He remained that way until he died in 2004. Despite his disability, he was inspired by reading Viktor Frankl’s ‘Man Search for Meaning’ to earn his PhD in psychology. He became a successful clinician and speaker. His personal credo was, “I broke my neck; it didn’t break me.” His soul journey exemplifies courage in the face of adversity and victorious living. His life touched many other souls and contributed to the universe’s expansion in a unique way to Jerry.

In 1998 he wrote a journal issue commemorating the recently deceased Viktor Frankl.

“Once, after speaking to a large audience, I was asked if I ever felt sad because I could no longer walk. I replied, “Professor Frankl can hardly see, I cannot walk at all, and many of you can hardly cope with life. What is crucial to remember is this – We don’t need just our eyes, just our legs, or just our minds. All we need are the wings of our souls, and together we can fly.” – Jerry L. Long.

In many cases, we can’t control what has happened to our loved ones or us, but in every case, we have the freedom to choose the meaning we give it.

Your Soul Contract Contributes To Evolution

So, what is your soul contract? Can you reflect on your life so far and “connect the dots?” As long as you’re aware of your actions and try to make a conscious decision, you’re fulfilling your soul’s contract beautifully. There is no need to seek out situations where soul contracts must be resolved. They’ll find you. All you need to do is trust in the synchronistic flow of life.

But there is an advantage to knowing that soul contracts exist. If you’re aware that most of the experiences you have aren’t a series of random events, you can step back and take an objective point of view.
